Skills Required to Join SAR

Field Personnel
Good bush and backcountry skills, including navigation, off track experience and survival skills
First aid certificate, preferably the MSC outdoor first aid qualification
Good physical fitness, able to carry overnight packs for long periods in difficult terrain
Quality personal equipment (we generally don’t supply personal equipment)
Good availability to respond to call outs, team player.

Incident management team
Use of mapping and database software
General administration skills
Good availability to respond to call outs, team player.

Specific skills such as search methods, tracking, clue processing, radio use, helicopter safety and rescue techniques will be taught by way of formal externally provided courses or in house training by experienced members.
